The Summer Polo Cup St. Moritz 2020, 24th – 26th of July 2020
St. Moritz, 25th of June 2020.
After the sport of polo entered the Engadin at the end of the 19thcentury, it has become an important economic factor thanks to the “Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz”, which has been taking place annually since 1985. With the “Summer Polo Cup”, the two local initiators Daniela Märky and Gian Andrea Conrad from the St. Moritz Polo Club, together with the new OK member Reto Gaudenzi, founder & CEO of the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, are reviving the tradition of summer polo. The event will take place from July 24th to 26th, 2020 on the San Gian Pferdesportwiese next to the Hotel Kempinski in St. Moritz Bad. Admission is free! Catering from 11.30 am.
Polo has a long tradition in the Engadine. It started with English cavalry officers who spent theirholidays in St. Moritz at the end of the 19th century and also played polo there. It is said, that the Pferdesportwiese San Gian in St. Moritz Bad was put into operation in 1898. After World War II, the Polo Sport disappeared and turned up again in the early 60-ies, when the local families Berry, Mathis and Badrutt regularly invited friends and played polo with them. In 1978, Reto Gaudenzi finally founded the St. Moritz Polo Team before he launched together with Dr. Hans Peter Danuser the “Polo World Cup on Snow” on the frozen Lake St. Moritz, which is still unique in the world. In addition, the European Polo Championship took place on the San Gian Pferdesportwiese in summer 1993 and the Polo World Championship in summer 1995, which was broadcast live on Swiss television SF.
A great program for young and old
For several years now, Daniela Märky and Gian Andrea Conrad have been organizing the sympathetic polo tournament for amateurs from all over the world. This year Reto Gaudenzi supports the OK and brings his contacts and his know-how in the organization of polo tournaments worldwide. It is a low goal class tournament for a handicap from -2 to max. +2 advertised. Eight international teams of three players will fight for the Summer Polo Cup for three days, as in previous years, admission is free. There is catering for the spectators and pony rides for children. Those who are brave enough can try out the Polo sport at the «Polo Clinic» from July 18-23. A lesson including horse and equipment costs CHF 200.00 and can be booked via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Daniela Märky and Gian Andrea Conrad explain: «Especially in this challenging time, we are very happy that our tournament can take place and also that we can make a contribution to the summer program of the Engadine. The interest in participating is very high, we are looking forward to welcome the players and their families from all over the world. » The two continue: “We are convinced that the summer polo sport in the Engadine has a great future and we are already working with Reto Gaudenzi on a concept for a larger tournament.”
